In gastric bypass operation the stomach is divided
into a small upper pouch and a much larger, lower pouch. The small
upper pouch is then joined to the small intestine..The small stomach
pouch will feel full more quickly than when stomach was its original
size, which reduces the amount of food taken and thus the calories
consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer
calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.
   Advantages:
The weight loss is upto 90-100% of Extra Weight Loss after this
surgery
Many associated medical conditions may be greatly
improved such as :
High Blood Pressure’ ( About 60 percent
of patients with high blood pressure are able to stop all medications
and have a normal blood pressure, usually within two to three months
after surgery.)
High Cholesterol (Hypercholesteremia) (More than
70 percent of patients will develop normal cholesterol levels within
two to three months.)
DiabetesMore
than 80 percent of Type-2 diabetics obtain excellent results, usually
within a few weeks after surgery
AsthmaAccording
to IFSO, successful bariatric surgery reduces the number and severity
of asthma attacks.
Respiratory
InsufficiencyImprovement of exercise tolerance and breathing ability
usually occurs within the first few months after surgery
Sleep Apnea SyndromeDramatic relief of sleep apnea
occurs as patients lose weight. Many report that within a year of
surgery, their symptoms were completely gone, and they had even
stopped snoring completely-and their spouses agree. Sleep apnea
is cured in about 75 percent of patients after surgery
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux DiseaseRelief of symptoms
of reflux usually occurs within a few weeks of surgery for many
patients
Gallbladder DiseaseWhen gallbladder disease is
present at the time of the surgery, it is "cured" by removing
the gallbladder during the operation
Stress Urinary IncontinenceThis condition responds
dramatically to weight loss and usually significant improvement
in the control occurs.
Low Back Pain, Degenerative Disk Disease, &
Degenerative Joint DiseasePatients usually experience considerable
relief of pain and disability from degenerative arthritis and disc
disease and from pain in the weight-bearing joints.
   Limitations
Surgical risk is higher as comared to purely restrictive procedures.
It can
not be esily reversed .
The malnutrition and deficiencies are common.
Side Effects:
Vitamin and mineral deficiency (iron deficiency
anemia, vitamin B-12 deficiency and vitamin D deficiency)
Dumping Syndrome This is a condition where stomach
contents move too quickly through the small intestine, causing nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and sweating. It's frequently experienced
after eating sweets or high-fat foods.
Dehydration
Gallstones
Bleeding stomach ulcer
Intolerance
to certain foods
Kidney stones
   Complications
bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Like
any other surgical procedures.
Blood clots
in the legs. (DVT) Blood clots in the legs are more likely to occur
in very overweight people. Blood clots can be dangerous. In some
cases, they travel to the lungs and lodge in the lungs' arteries
causing a pulmonary embolism — a serious condition that damages
lung tissue and can lead to death.
Leaking
at one of the staple lines in the stomach. This is a evere postoperative
problem. It may heal with conservative treatment of antibiotics
.Often, however, the leak can be serious enough to require re-surgery.
Narrowing
of the opening stoma between the stomach and small intestine. It
may require endoscopic dilatation or a corrective surgery.
